Almost two

Now that spring has arrived and it’s in the 70’s I’ve finally begun to accept that Elizabeth is turning two.  She’s almost two years old, guys!  Two!  She’s the most kind, understanding, docile, and eager toddler I’ve come across.  She’s genuinely a great little girl.  Her temper tantrums make other kid’s good days look bad.  Elizabeth is simply perfect.

Not only that, but Alodia is turning 6 months old this week.  The majority of people say she looks just like Will, but I’ve begun to receive “she looks just like you” comments recently.  Her fist half-year is almost complete.  She’s about to begin sleeping in her own room, eating solid food and she’s SO motivated about it.

I’m in complete denial about these precious little girls growing up, but in all reality toddlers are more fun than babies anyway.

I would have a photo of A from our first beach day of 2017 but she was napping in the carrier while Elizabeth and I walked up and down the beach collecting sea shells, rocks, fist fulls of sand, and shark teeth. So you’ll just have to accept photos of E instead. 🙂

Exploring Swansboro, NC

I love ice cream.  You could say that ice cream is a guilty pleasure of mine, or just simply understand that I become a child if there is an opportunity for me to get some ice cream, it’s just so good.  Swansboro has the cutest little candy store that I have seen, and inside of that store they sell ice cream, candy (of course), pop corn, fudge, and cotton candy.  This store is Candy Edventure and it is my favorite place in Swansboro.  They have very accommodating hours which allows for you to enjoy a delicious treat after an early dinner on a weekend, whereas most other shops close late afternoon or early evening.

For dinner I have enjoyed Saltwater Grill which is absolutely delicious and comfortable inside, but we don’t regular the joint because it is a little bit more expensive than we typically prefer to spend.

With that being said, Church Street Deli is delicious and affordable.  I have been dreaming about their sandwiches for a month now since I first ate there.  They don’t have many options on their menu but what they do have is worth it.  I don’t think an addition of fried pickles would hurt anything though. 😉

Hammocks Beach State Park is such a nice place as well, the mainland portion of the park is beautiful with a nicely landscaped waterfront and rentals or ferry rides to Bear Island.  I highly recommend a visit to Hammocks Beach if you’re in the area.

What is your favorite Swansboro hidden or not-so-hidden gem?

Exploring Beaufort, NC

This was a cool little town.

We began our day in Beaufort by taking a ferry to Shackleford Banks.  This island was awesome.  My largest piece of advice is bring a beach umbrella.  We were on the island for about 3.5 hours without any form of shade whatsoever; we are very fortunate that Elizabeth had her stroller to lounge in without being in the sun because besides her, we all got too much sun this day.

The major selling point about visiting Shackleford Banks is the wild mustangs that reside on the island, two of them can be seen in the photos above.  Elizabeth was ecstatic about them, but not so excited that they took away from the thrill of being in the sand, shells, and water.

The strength of the tide was more than I expected and have experienced in any of the other beaches in this area, so that is one major thing to consider with young children.

This photo shows Baby Butler #2, too!

The Maritime Museum was on our to-do list but unfortunately we just barely missed it because we toured the awesome shops along Front St.  We also had hopes that we would be able to partake in a ghost walk that evening but decided an hour before the walk began that it was better to head home and not push E’s limits too much.

Instead of doing the walk, we visited the Old Burying Grounds but could not enter due to it being after-hours, and drove by Blackbeard’s former home.  The historic houses in the area are stunning and bode impressive erection dates.

This is another town I cannot wait to get another opportunity to explore.  The next time we go, I would love to get to Fort Macon as well as the Maritime Museum and the ghost walk.

Beach

Being stationed here at Camp Lejeune I have really dug in and researched the web to discover the area.  I don’t want to miss out on things I may never have an opportunity to experience again.  This week I have really taken up on going to the Beach.  It hasn’t been the nicest weather, in fact it has been completely cloud cover, chilly, windy, and rainy.  I have been fortunate in that we visit for 90 minutes at most and never seem to get rained on.  Elizabeth has loved it.  She and I went together the first day while Will was working and it was warm enough for shorts and a tshirt.  We found a few little shark teeth that day, too!  The following day we went to the beach with Will and we found even more shark teeth (I sense an obsession coming on).  Elizabeth loves everything about the ocean.  If she’s being held or strapped into her stroller she is content watching the waves break or the birds fly by.

We live about 30 minutes from the beach right now, luckily it’s right here on base so it is an easy trip to make, but I couldn’t be happier about it.  Every time I’m at the beach my mind is at peace.  It finally gives me quiet time (If are un-medicated ADD, you probably understand).  While we are here for the next two years I plan to really explore my surroundings and experience everything I can. 🙂

Quick Beach Trip

Snapchat-3284489783346352542Today I decided that I wanted to take Elizabeth to the beach.  I didn’t want to bring lounge chairs or her stroller to stick her in, I knew I wanted it to be fun for her (which means work for me, haha).  It was in the high 70’s/low 80’s and overcast so it was perfect for a little beach baby.

We packed up a towel, some snacks and the essentials and headed to the beach.  I was lucky that she took a quick nap on the way there which allowed her to be in a great mood the entire time.

Upon arriving she was instantly intrigued by the sand.  She really enjoyed digging into it with both hands until she realized how great it tasted.  Once that realization struck she had no goal other than to eat everything she could get her hands on.

The best way to combat my little eating fists full of sand was to carry her; so we headed to the water to find some shark teeth.  She enjoyed watching the birds flying around, the stones and shells being washed back and forth, and the waves crashing in.

This baby belongs at the beach.  We went home to allow her to nap and get some inside time, but we will be heading back with Will once he gets out of work.
